Three wrestlers from Northshore finish in top six at the Mat Classic

Bothell seniors Aaron Ibanez and Virgil Smith finished their high school wrestling careers on Saturday in the top six in state during the Mat Classic at the Tacoma Dome.

Bothell seniors Aaron Ibanez and Virgil Smith, along with Inglemoor junior Andy Pham, finished their high school wrestling careers on Saturday in the top six in state during the Mat Classic at the Tacoma Dome.

Pham recovered from a first-round loss on Friday to finish fourth in state in the 138-pound weight class. He took his frustrations from Friday out on Gavin Eaglin of Graham-Kapowsin with an impressive 9-3 victory to start his day. Pham then defeated Ryden Fu of Tahoma, 8-4. The victory brought Pham all the way back to challenge for third in state but lost, 16-4, to Jahleel Smith of Kent Meridian.

Smith finished fifth in the 152-pound weight class, while Ibanez was sixth at 195 pounds for Bothell.

Smith lost hist first two matches of the day, 7-3, to Ty Wilson of Puyallup during the state semifinals and then 9-1 during his first match of the consolation bracket. But Smith recovered during his match for fifth in state by defeating Marcus Hendrickson of Heritage High School, 12-6.

Ibanez did not fair as well, losing all three matches in which he competed. He was pinned during the second round (2:51) of the semifinal match for the state title by Adam Hokenson of Tahoma and then lost his first consolation bracket match to Eli Teu Teu of Bethel, 6-4. During the match for fifth and sixth place Ibanez put together a good technical match but ultimately lost, 8-3, to Donivan McElliott of Ferris.

Inglemoor junior Riley Seward, wrestling at 145 pounds, lost to Oscar Springsteen of Bethel, 4-1, during his only match of the day.

Viking Caleb Brejda won his first match on Saturday, 3-2, but lost his second match via pin fall.

Inglemoor senior Terra Strecker was the only female wrestler to advance to state from Northshore. She lost her only match on Saturday via pin fall.
