LaVine, Callendret combine for 75 points to push Cougars past Newport | Prep boys basketball

Zach LaVine and Perrion Callendret have had some big games together.

Zach LaVine and Perrion Callendret have had some big games together at Bothell High School. But none have been bigger than Tuesday’s performance against Newport during the first round of the 4A KingCo tournament.

The seniors, both bound for Division I colleges next season, led the No. 2 ranked Bothell boys basketball team past an upset attempt by Newport, 91-86, combining for 75 points.

The Knights stunned the crowd in the Bothell High School gymnasium during the first quarter, pulling out to a 21-14 lead. The Knights carried that seven-point advantage into halftime.

But Bothell struck back during the third quarter with a 27-point effort that Newport could not keep up with. The run gave the Cougars a four-point lead that the team would cling to during the fourth quarter to win the game.

Individually, LaVine scored 43 points while Callendret scored 32.

With the win, Bothell advances to the second round of the tournament and will take on Issaquah on Friday at 8 p.m. at Juanita High School.

Issaquah has given Bothell good competition during the past two seasons, including an upset last year. This season, Bothell swept both games between the two schools, including a 67-64 win on Dec. 18 and a 68-47 win on Dec. 29.
