At the 4A state gymnastics meet on Saturday at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Center, a pair of Inglemoor High girls brought home some state hardware.

For one, it was a hard-earned return trip after heartbreak last year, and for the other it was the culmination of a solid sophomore season.

Inglemoor senior Shawna Kelley punched a ticket to state last year, but fell ill just before the competition and was forced to sit out. Having to start from square one, Kelley shined during the postseason and made it to the finals in the bars event, scoring 8.925 during her final run to finish fourth.

“Last year, we had just two girls at state, Amy Sisk (all-around) and Shawna Kelley,” noted Vikings’ head coach Matt Watson. “Shawna got to come back here in her final year and make it to the finals, which is really great as a senior.”

Do-it-all sophomore Mina Tanaka placed 10th in the all-around with a cumulative score of 35.8, just 2.1 points off the pace held by 4A state champion Hailey Wells of Woodinville.

Advancing to the finals in the beam, she put together a solid, mistake-free routine to finish in a three-way tie for fourth with 9.275 points with Julie Tollifson of Woodinville and Todd Beamer standout Sam West. Woodinville’s Mary McIntosh won the event with a score of 9.5.

“She didn’t have any wobbles or anything, she looked really good,” said Watson of Tanaka’s performance in the beam finals. “Mina did really well, I’m proud of her.”

Bothell’s Karli Bodine and Katie Thoma of Inglemoor participated in Friday’s preliminaries in the beam event, and just missed out on the cut to Saturday’s competition. They both scored 9.00, good enough for a tie for 11th place out of 96 participants, with the top eight moving on to the finals.
