Inglemoor High senior Cole Hublou made amends for a heartbreaking finish at the 4A District Tournament last year to earn his first berth to the 4A State Golf Championships, to be held in Spokane next May.
Hublou, who missed the cut to state by one shot last year, fired one of the best rounds of the second day at the difficult Eagle’s Talon course at Willows Run Golf Club in Redmond, a 2-over 74 to give him a 76-74–150 total, good for a tie for second place with Redmond’s Lyle Rudnicki.
Woodinville’s Kyle Lindor won the tournament, shooting 73 both days to finish at 2-over 146.
“It was a lot easier than yesterday, nicer weather,” said Hublou on Wednesday’s conditions compared to the wet and windy Tuesday. “It was easier to score.”
With teammates Gavin Blair and Alec Hayton outside the cut line, Hublou was fighting hard to be the Vikings’ lone representative to state. Teeing off at 8 a.m. with all the other competitors in a shotgun start, he got off to a horrible start, suffering a bogey and double bogey on the first two holes.
But remembering the heartbreak of last fall at Snohomish Golf Course, he dug deep and turned his game around.
“I went 1-under for the next 16 (holes),” Hublou said, making two birdies and just one bogey the rest of the way, including firing a wedge approach on the par-5 18th hole that nearly spun in the hole. “Overall, it was a great day… (after) missing state by one shot last year, it feels great. I’m pretty happy.”
