The Inglemoor and Bothell High wrestling teams shined on the league’s biggest stage last weekend at Issaquah High School, advancing a total of 16 wrestlers onto the regional tournament this weekend at Rogers High in Puyallup against the tough South Puget Sound League.
The Vikings ended up third overall behind Issaquah and Woodinville with nine placers and a 35-17 overall record at the tournament.
Highlights for Inglemoor included Mitchell Barker finishing runner-up in the 120 weight class, falling to Woodinville’s A.J. Dedios 9-1 in the finals, with Jake Lindoff also advancing.
Wrestling at 138, Gabe Seward ran through the field, going 4-0 with a pin, a technical fall and two decisions, including his 12-5 win over Jerdon Helgeson of Issaquah in the finals.
At 145, Ian Bedo placed fourth, falling to Northshore rival Dustin Rhode of Bothell in a tight 2-1 final there, with both advancing.
Jared Koukal (160) reached the semifinals in convincing fashion, pinning Kevin Strong of Garfield in 1 minute, 15 seconds and scoring a technical fall, 17-1, in the next match before falling to one of the state’s best in Ryan Christensen of Woodinville and eventually placing third.
Two Vikings advanced in the 170 bracket, Sam Gastineau, who placed second – falling to Eastlake’s Eric Harper in the finals 4-2, and Blake Moody who placed sixth.
Gastineau and Moody actually met in the quarterfinals, with Gastineau achieving a quick pin of his teammate in 1:01.
Mark Johnson took third in 182, winning out after a first-round loss, capping his run with a 4-2 win over Bridger Hayashi of Roosevelt.
Josh Koukal, wrestling at 195, powered his way through the bracket, with two first-round pins and a 9-5 victory over Garrett Mack of Roosevelt to win the division, with teammate Ty Utton receiving a fortunate injury default from his opponent in the consolation bracket which sent him to Regionals, eventually placing fifth.
In the 220 class, Ben Carson pinned Bothell’s Tommy Forker in 2:31 before falling to eventual champion Jake Hollister of Woodinville, but Carson came back to pin Newport’s Austin Curtis in 1:48 to take third. Forker also advanced, in fifth.
The Vikings also got a heavyweight through, Andrew Stocker, who took fourth.
For Bothell, Brandon Davidson dominated his way through the 152-pound bracket, pinning Kristjan Sigmar of Ballard in 2:59, before routing Taylor Evans (Issaquah) via technical fall 17-1, and shut out Ian Crouch of Skyline 11-0 for the championship. Crouch had two pins and a 15-0 shutout himself prior to the finals.
Other placers for Bothell included Kyle Hanson at 132 (3rd, defeated Joey Gurke of Skyline via pin in 2:36); Allen Resendiz at 126 (fourth place); Max Hanson at 195 (fourth place); Willem Gmazel at 182 (sixth place).
