Eagles flying high: Cedar Park teams set for state championships

The Cedar Park Christian Eagles' spring sports teams are enjoying a banner year, as the softball, track, and boys' soccer teams are all alive and kicking for state titles.

The Cedar Park Christian Eagles’ spring sports teams are enjoying a banner year, as the softball, track, and boys’ soccer teams are all alive and kicking for state titles.

The Eagles’ fastpitch squad took the long road to the state tournament, handily defeating Orting, 10-2, and Chimicum, 9-3, to earn the program’s 10th consecutive state berth. The girls get the 1A state tournament underway this Friday against Cle Elum/Rosalyn at noon at Frankling Park in Spokane.

The boys’ soccer team has advanced to the 1A state semifinals after identical 1-0 shutout wins over Rochester and Ridgefield last weekend.

The semifinals will feature the Eagles taking on White Salmon at 2 p.m. on Friday at Sunset Chevrolet Stadium in Sumner, with the winner advancing to the state championship game on Saturday, also at 2 p.m.

In addition, 21 athletes from Cedar Park have qualified for the state 1A Track and Field Championships this weekend at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.

At the Tri-District Championships at King’s High School in Seattle last weekend, the Eagles will be led by sophomore Sally Larson, a distance specialist who qualified in three events (800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters) as well as senior Trevin Jorgenson who qualified for both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles events.  Cyndee Dufenhorst, also a senior, qualified in the discus for the third straight year with a personal best 106 feet, 7 inches, and looks to improve on her best finish of 11th in 2009.

Overall, the Eagle boys placed sixth out of 17 teams at Tri-Districts, and the girls fourth out of 18.

In addition, senior Kevin House, who recorded two consecutive shutouts for the Eagles’ soccer team in the state tournament last weekend, achieved a rare feat of playing in two events in the same day. Just hours before shutting out the Ridgefield Spudders 1-0 in the quarterfinals, House recorded a 5-4 high jump at the tri-district track meet in Seattle to finish in a tie for ninth place in the event, then bussed three hours south to Camas to join the soccer team.

“Kevin is participating on two teams at this time due to the fact that the Emerald City League boys soccer season takes place in the fall while the 1A state tournament is conducted in the spring,” explained Cedar Park athletic director Bill Bettinger. “Kevin is to be commended for participating at championship levels in both sports during the same season and on the same day.”

The 1A state track and field meet begins on Friday at 10 a.m. and runs through Saturday.
