Dragland dives big at nationals, for University of Alabama

Bothell High graduate Carrie Dragland recently took fourth place on the 10-meter tower at the USA Diving Senior Nationals in Tallahassee, Fla.

After landing a scholarship to the University of Alabama, she set a Southeastern Conference (SEC) record last season on 3-meter, winning first place, second on 10-meter tower, SEC diver of the year and SEC freshman diver of the year. She qualified for the NCAA Nationals on all events and was awarded a full scholarship for her sophomore year 2009-2010.

Alabama will begin its season Oct. 3 against Georgia Tech and Georgia Southern.

In December, it will be two years since she started diving tower and she is hoping to qualify for the 2012 Olympics. She has one of the highest degrees of difficulty on 3-meter springboard and tower in the country.

At Bothell High, she was runner-up at the 2008 Washington state 4A diving championship.

In gymnastics, she was the 2007 and 2008 Washington state 4A all-around champion. As a senior, she won the state vault title with a perfect 10.0.
