The Cedar Park Christian football team did not return empty handed from the 15th Annual Big Kahuna Passing Challenge in Vancouver, B.C., which took place June 26-27.
Over the course of the tournament, Cedar Park went 5-2 and took third place in the 12-team event.
After winning its opening game, 46-20, against Seaquam (B.C.), Cedar Park dropped a close game to WJ Mouat (B.C.), 45-35. The Eagles rebounded to win the final group-play game against New Westminster (B.C.), 40-19, earning the No. 3 seed heading into the second day.
The first game of Day 2 for Cedar Park did not end easy. After scoring a 2-point conversion to tie the game with no time left, Cedar Park scored the first touchdown, a 5-yard TD pass from Justin Girgus to Riley O’Regan, in overtime. As the opposition, New Westminster lined up on the 5-yard line, and Cody Cole made a diving deflection on the final down to secure the Cedar Park victory, 35-28.
After a tough loss to Ballenas (B.C.) in the semifinals, Cedar Park won the third-place game in a rematch against Seaquam, 41-21.
Girgus threw 37 TDs in the tournament, 13 to Zach Dinsmore, who was awarded a spot on the all-tournament team, finishing one vote shy for MVP.
O’Regan caught seven TDs, Steve Hunsaker caught six TDs and Cole and Jake Kragerud snagged five TDs each. Austin Donnel had one TD.
Dinsmore led the team with six interceptions.
