The Bothell boys basketball ran into a buzz saw Friday night. Garfield’s Tucker Haymond scored 20 first-quarter points to lead the Bulldogs to the 4A KingCo tournament title, 93-69 at Juanita High School.

Haymond hit three three-pointers to start the game, giving Garfield an early 11-7 lead – a lead they would never relinquish.

Cougars Perrion Callendret and Josh Martin hit two three–pointers each during the first quarter, but a 9-2 run by Garfield gave the team a 28-21 lead at the end of the first eight minutes of play.

Garfield continued to pull away as Bothell’s Zach LeVine, the KingCo MVP, scored his first points of the game half way into the second quarter.

“Every team plays you harder during the playoffs,” said LaVine, who would atone, finishing the first half with nine points.

But the second half was a nightmare for the Cougar faithful among the standing-room-only crowd. A 53-45 Garfield lead soon ballooned to 64-49.

Bothell once again tried to get back into the game with a 9-3 run, but a last second rainbow shot from a Garfield player seemed to tamp down the Cougars’ momentum heading into the final eight minutes of play.

The only highlight for Bothell from the fourth quarter came as Josh Martin threw down a monster dunk that led to a collective “awe” from the crowd. But the Bulldogs would close out the Cougars 24-11 during the final frame to take the tournament title.

Haymond led all scorers with 39 points, while Bothell was led by Martin and Callendret with 19 points each and LaVine had 18.

Bothell now enters the district tournament as the No. 2 seed from KingCo.
