Bothell juniors defeat Newport, 14-8, in football championship game

While the Bothell High football team racked up a state win on Friday, a Bothell junior team did quite well itself by winning the varsity title on Saturday in the Greater Eastside Junior Football Association championship game.

The Bothell Varsity White 13- and 14-year-olds defeated Newport, 14-8, at Pop Keeney Stadium. Newport, which won the title last year, suffered its first loss and finished 9-1-1. Bothell also completed a 9-1-1 season.

Quarterback Ross Bowers scored on a 5-yard run in the second quarter and Shawn Munro scored on a 15-yard run in the third quarter.

Ryan Croson also made an instrumental catch during the game.

The game was defined by a defensive battle on both sides.

Bothell held Newport behind the 5-yard-line for four downs three times. There were crucial stops on long runs and in the backfield by Colton Sather and Kekoa Keo and by Bothell’s defensive line.

Newport fumbled three times during the game with recoveries by Tyler Wharf, Jordan Barker and Reed Coover.

In the semifinals the previous week, the Cougs beat Liberty, 42-28.
