Q: How did you get started playing football when you were younger?
A: My best friend Adam Boase, who plays for us now, he always played.
I was a soccer player — I wanted to go play because it looked so fun, but I was never able to because my parents were soccer fanatics and they wouldn’t let me. One year I just did, and they said, “Alright, you can play,” when I was going into sixth grade.
Q: When did you end up taking football really seriously?
A: Right after that year, actually. I really liked it. I played quarterback my first year, and just said I was going to stick with this.
Q: Having been in the program for a few years now, what do you think it is that has made the Bothell Cougars so successful?
A: It’s like a family here. Everyone’s really close, and everyone trusts each other really well.
The coaches are unbelievable. They know what they’re doing and put so much work into what they do.
Q: As the team’s starting quarterback for the last two years, how have you adapted into your leadership role on this team as a senior starter?
A: I’ve adapted pretty well. Being a leader doesn’t even have to be about being the starting quarterback, but being a senior out there now, (pushing) everyone to go hard. There’s a lot of leaders out there now, you just kind of go with it.
Q: How do you stay cool under pressure, with the game essentially in your hands?
A: When a big play happens, you know, you get up, but our team’s really good at refocusing and getting right back down, on an even keel.
It just kinda comes to you… and experience helps. Being there before like last year in the Issaquah (playoff) game, bringing back memories about what you did before and how to make it better this time.
Q: How much does it help to have the fan support you guys do, from the Blue Train to the Bothell community every week at Pop Keeney?
A: It’s awesome. It helps so much, just like the Seahawks at Qwest Field and the 12th man. It’s so loud, I mean in the big games like Skyline, it helps so much to have the students come out, making noise, causing penalties.
Just having our community being there, our Blue Train horn, it’s all exciting and gets everyone going.
Q: What are your plans for the future? Do you plan to play in college and maybe make it to the NFL some day?
A: I’m undecided (on playing in college), just not sure yet. The NFL is kind of a high goal, but my goal right now is to get into a good school and finish through college.
Q: What do you plan to pursue as a career if you don’t play football?
A: I’m thinking about going into business, or actually medicine.
Q: When all is said and done, what will you take away or remember most from your days playing football at Bothell High?
A: There’s so many great memories, but to be honest I’ll have to say spring ball. That’s where everyone starts coming closer.
We go to camps, they’re awesome… Camp Brotherhood is great, we do so many fun activities, campfires, it’s all really cool.
