Bothell football routs Newport, 42-14; Inglemoor loses a wild one

The Bothell High Cougar football team won its league and home opener last Friday night at the newly renovated Pop Keeney Stadium, 42-14, over the Newport High Knights.

The Cougars, playing in a steady rain, took an early lead on a four-play, 68-yard drive that running back Luke Proulx capped with a 1-yard touchdown run.

The Knights tried to answer, getting inside Bothell’s 5-yard line three times, but were unable to cross into the end zone until the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, Bothell kept the ball on the ground, relying on its offensive line, and Proulx’s speed (156 yards on 19 rushes) to move the ball upfield. The Cougars only threw three times in the first half, but when they did, they were incredibly efficient. Quarterback Braden Foley finished the night 8-for-9 with 193 yards and three touchdowns, highlighted by a 41-yard bomb to Trent Sewell to put the Cougars up 13-0 at the half.

With the win, Bothell improved to 1-0 in 4A Kingco league play and 2-1 overall and will host Roosevelt at 7 p.m. Friday.

• Inglemoor

It was a back-and-forth, all-Viking battle on the gridiron for Inglemoor against Lake Stevens last Friday night at Lake Stevens High, with the home team prevailing, 37-30.

Inglemoor took an early 10-0 lead thanks to a mammoth 92-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Mitchell Gunsolus to Conner Savage, and the two teams traded scores until the fourth quarter, when Inglemoor was up 30-29.

Lake Stevens quarterback Jake Nelson, who had already ran in two scores and passed for one, launched a 50-yard touchdown pass to Quincy Carroll and pulled off a successful two-point play to give his team the victory.

Inglemoor’s Rick Gombatz played a role in all six of the Viking scores, kicking all three extra points and sending field goals of 23, 30 and 40 yards through the uprights.

The loss dropped Inglemoor to 1-2 overall. The Vikings will host Ballard at 7 p.m. Thursday.
