With victories over top-ranked class 1A teams, Cedar Park Christian notched its first-ever tri-district volleyball title last weekend.
The Eagles continued their postseason hot streak by knocking off No. 1-ranked Onalaska three sets to two (25-15, 25-22, 23-25, 24-26, 15-3) Thursday in the state tournament at the Yakima Sundome. Chelan dropped Cedar Park in its next match, 3-0 (25-21, 25-6, 25-15), and then the Eagles fell to Freeman, 3-1 (25-22, 24-26, 25-14, 25-15), on Friday to end their season.
At tri-districts, the Eagles defeated Annie Wright (3-1), Lynden Christian (3-1) and finally Cascade Christian (3-0) to take the crown.
Cedar Park finished 19-4 overall and won 16 of its games in 2-0 or 3-0 set shutouts in league and tournaments.
The team featured Emerald City League first-teamers Candice Whipple (outside hitter) and Lyndsay Palmer (setter), second-teamers Mattie Shelford (outside hitter) and Cyndee Dufenhorst (middle/outside hitter) and honorable mention Kayla Zacharias (libero).
The girls, who began their season with 3-0 wins over South Kitsap and Othello at a Yakima Sundome tournament, dedicated their season to assistant coach Jamena Williams, who is undergoing radiation and chemotherapy for cancer.
“The team has really rallied around her,” said Cedar Park athletic director Bill Bettinger. “The team is cherishing every moment they have with coach Williams.”
Other team members were: coach Julie Nelson, Jessica Abbott, Arianna Gardner, Margaret Greenfield, Samantha Lundberg, Amy Merkle, Carley Ridout and Kayla Roth.
