Inglemoor High track stars rose to the occasion last Friday and notched state track berths by finishing in the top three during the final heats of the District 2 and 4 Track and Field Championships, held at the Southwest Athletic Complex in Seattle.

Tess Parent, a senior who matched her state-best long jump of 18 feet, 5.25 inches at districts to earn a state berth in that event, also won the triple jump with a leap of 37-1.25, edging out Garfield’s Taylor McKinney (36-1).

Viking senior Brittany McKinney crushed her personal best in the long jump, leaping 17-8 to make state.

Bernie Hagan, also a senior, kept his phenomenal track season going by placing third in the 1,600 meters with a time of 4 minutes, 23.59 seconds. Redmond senior and state favorite Mack Young won the event in 4:20.78.

Shamus Mukai earned the third and final state spot in the pole vault by clearing 14 feet, which ties a personal best.

The 400 relay team of Kamin Jenkins, Mark Roetcisoender, Jordan Gray and Todd Raynes came in second by .03 of a second Skyline (42.61 to 42.64) to punch their ticket to state.

Hurdler Becca Berge ran away from the field in the 100 hurdles, clocking 15.32, and also made state in the 300, finishing second in 44.82.

The relay squad of Lindsay Johanson, McKenna Grimsby, Parent and Hannah Stevenson won the 400 relay in 48.33 and also finished second in the 800 in 1:42.70 to earn state berths in both events.

In the 1,600 relay, Erin Allen, Sarah Nash, Lacey London and Berge combined for a state-qualifying time of 4:01.84.

Bothell will send seven athletes to the 4A state track-and-field meet: Brendan Peterson, Ashkon Nima, Alex Neil and the 400 relay team of Adam Boase, Oliver Hurtin, Luke Proulx and Reggie Davis.

Peterson, a junior, notched a lifetime best shot put of 49 feet, 4 inches to earn a state spot.

Nima made the cut in the 800 by the slightest of margins, .59 of a second, in a tightly-contested 800 race with a personal-best time of 1:55.41. The Cougars will also be represented in the 800 on the girls’ side by Neil, whose run of 2:16.81 was two-hundreths of a second behind winner Lynelle Decker.

Boase, Hurtin, Proulx and Davis sprinted their way to a state berth in 43:04 in the 400 relay.

The 4A state track and field meet gets under way with preliminary races this Thursday at Mount Tahoma High in Tacoma, with events running through Saturday.
