The Bothell High jazz choir and Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe of Bothell are in sync.

A few minutes after the Sheri Erickson-directed choir wowed the crowd at the Northshore Performing Arts Center Foundation’s “Spring for the Arts” lunch and auction last Thursday, McAuliffe stepped up to the mic and offered some words of wisdom that had the same effect as a well-sung melody.

She spoke of having a dream of bringing the Northshore Performing Arts Center to Bothell and giving students both a chance to perform on stage and listen to top-notch traveling musicians. She said that students need to believe in themselves and find their gift of music, theater or dance. Arts are important to growing youths, she added.

I couldn’t agree more and must say that although I’m a music guy, I’ve learned to appreciate all forms of arts over the years. I remember watching in awe at the dancers in “The Nutcracker” on stage at El Camino Community College in Gardena, Calif., as a youngster. I’m sure my mom dragged me there against my will, but it did have a positive effect on me.

And watching the Bothell choir last week was a treat, as well, from the harmonies to the freewheelin’ jazz style of singing to the keyboard and guitar backing. It was also addictive watching Erickson get her singers in the mood with her upbeat style.
