The University of Washington Bothell School of Business will collaborate with the Carol Sanford Institute to create The Responsible Business Executive Education Program. The executive education certificate program offers a path to the future of business by offering a revolutionary approach on executive educator and author Carol Sanford’s experience as to what the business of the future looks like and how to create it. “Carol provides entrepreneurs and executives in the Pacific Northwest a powerful lesson – responsible management is the key to long-term sustainable growth. Drawing from her years of corporate and academic experience, Carol brings a level of credibility to the topic that is unmatched,” says School of Business Dean Sandeep Krishnamurthy.

Sanford, author of the award-winning books, The Responsible Business and The Responsible Entrepreneur, will lead the program as its Director and its teaching faculty. She has also been named an Executive in Residence for the campus. Her extensive experience as a business executive educator for nearly forty years and across nearly thirty industries has made her a respected guest lecturer at Harvard, MIT, Stanford and Ross Michigan. Sanford’s books are required reading at over one hundred universities including Harvard, Stanford, Babson and University of Michigan.

“As a former Apple executive, board member of the Washington Business Alliance and business school mentor, I know business leaders need to respond to 21st century challenges with innovative ideas and a holistic and responsible foundation,” said Lisa Wellman, an advisory board member for the program. “Carol opens minds. This is an amazing opportunity for business leaders of the Pacific Northwest to work with her directly.”

The program and each of its offerings is innovative in seven ways in the world of business education:

Creating Community Partners – working with innovative businesses and media to change the conversation about success to include all stakeholders working together for systemic success within the Cascadia region;

Philosophy and Practice – promoting developmental approaches in all aspects of business (i.e. working toward realizing the potential of people, materials, offerings, and markets), regenerative foundations, and using a hierarchy of thinking that fosters the connection between great and innovative ideas and ways to affect radically improved concrete outcomes)

Methodology – Socratic instruction coupled with consultative learning and peer mentoring with a developmental approach grows students more rapidly and simultaneously combines learning and doing;

Curriculum – Using frameworks for thinking and pushing boundaries, rather than static models or best practices, that make innovation necessary and possible in core subjects;

Sourcing – Research is drawn from tested case stories and methods by the people who collaboratively created them in the field rather than academic constructions; and

Responsibility – We educate on how to embed responsibility into every decision and action of the business, rather make it a program or project that is a sidebar to everyday work.

The one-year certificate program is designed for growth-minded entrepreneurs and business executives. It is divided into three trimesters, focusing on Strategic Thinking, Leadership of Change and Operations and Work Design respectively. Participants will work with a small community of entrepreneurs and business unit leaders who are all committed to building and growing a great business, responsibly.

Krishnamurthy says the program enables the UW Bothell School of Business to deepen its commitment to the Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) initiative, the first organized relationship between the United Nations and business schools created to inspire and champion responsible management education, research and thought leadership globally.

Registration will begin in early October. Classes will begin on Jan. 8, 2016.
