University of Washington Bothell and the surrounding community will gather at the campus’ new Veterans Archway to honor student veterans, alumni veterans and their families today from 4-6 p.m.
Chancellor Wolf Yeigh, a U.S. Navy veteran will host the reception. He says he understands the commitment to serve and the challenge of returning and navigating the path to higher education.
“Coming to the United States was one of those great opportunities I’ve been given that I’m very thankful for,” Yeigh said. “And serving in the military, giving back, was one of those things I said I had to do.”
After receiving a master of science in mechanical engineering from Stanford University, Yeigh put additional graduate education on hold to join the U.S. Navy. After his military service, including a tour in the first Gulf War, he returned to complete his graduate education.
Yeigh will be joined by several special guests, including Mike Thom, current Student Veterans Association (SVA) president. Ben Wiselogle, UW Bothell alumnus and former SVA president who, with the SVA, helped raised the majority of the funds for the Veterans Archway, and representatives from local veterans organizations.
At the reception, veteran students and veteran alumni will be acknowledged for the tremendous sacrifices made during their service and new veteran students will be welcomed to the campus.
UW Bothell has further committed to the successful transition of veterans to the campus by hiring Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs Vet Corps representative Erle Hunter. He will assist other veterans or service member with their educational life goals and improve the knowledge of the veterans in regards to benefits, service, and resources.
