The University of Washington Bothell has confirmed that two of its students were involved in a shooting on Saturday in Mukilteo.
UW Bothell student Anna Bui was among three people who were killed when another UW Bothell student, Allen Ivanov, 19, allegedly opened fire at a home in the Chennault neighborhood. Between 15 and 20 people had gathered at the home for a party. A fourth person was also seriously injured and taken to Harborview Medical Center. The victim is in serious condition in intensive care.
Ivanov was arrested about two hours after the shooting traveling south on Interstate 5 in Lewis County. Ivanov is believed to be the only suspect involved with the case and was booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of three counts of murder, including one count of aggravated murder. He has not yet been charged and is expected to face arraignment today.
“Yesterday was a day of tremendous heartbreak for our community,” a statement from UW Bothell reads on the school’s website. “One of the victims in the fatal shootings in Mukilteo was one of our students, Anna Bui. Our hearts go out to her family and friends for their terrible loss…
“There’s no doubt some of you know Anna or Allen, or both and will be devastated by this news. I implore you to counter violence with compassion. Understanding the cruel twists of life is not an easy task.”
The school plans to hold a community support gathering today at 1 p.m. on the second floor of its Activities and Recreation building on the UW Bothell campus.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this senseless act of violence,” the UW Bothell statement reads. “I hope you will all join me in offering our deepest sympathies to the victims’ families.”
About 200 people attended a vigil at Mukilteo’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Sunday evening.
