A wrong-way driver who collided with another car on Interstate 405 in Bothell this morning was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, said Washington State Patrol trooper and spokeswoman Julie Startup.
Startup noted that they received a call at 1:22 a.m. Friday about the wrong-way driver; three minutes later, they received word of the head-on collision.
Several troopers and one detective converged on the scene and closed all southbound lanes of I-405 just north of Northeast 195th Street, and diverted traffic onto State Route 527. The 24-year-old female, wrong-way driver suffered serious injuries and had to be cut from her wrecked Subaru Sedan and transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle; the male Jeep driver who was hit was taken to Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland.
The wrong-way driver is under investigation for vehicular assault, Startup said.
“Traffic flow was very light at that time, and there were no backups,” she added, noting that no other cars were involved in the accident.
