Three students from the Northshore School District, Kyle and Karen Haining from Kenmore Junior High and Vikram Ramasamy from Northshore Junior High, played in the National Junior High Chess Championships in Louisville, Ky. during the last weekend of April 2015.
In the National K-9 Bughouse Championship tournament Kyle and Vikram, playing as a team, tied for second place and won third place on tie breaks.
The tournament hosted 42 teams of two.
In the National K-9 Blitz Championship tournament Kyle won first place and Vikram tied for eighth place and won 15th place on tie breaks.
The tournament hosted 181 students.
During the National K-9 Chess Championship tournament, Kyle won fifth place in the K-9 Championship section, Vikram tied for 20th place and won 24th place on tie breaks in the K-8 Championship section, and Karen tied for fifth place and won 13th place on tie breaks in the K-9 Under 1250 section.
More than 900 players from across the nation participated in the chess championship tournament, which was divided into six sections to allow students of differing ages and skill to play in a section appropriate for their ability.
The strongest players competed in the championship sections. “Under” sections were reserved for weaker players. The K-9 Championship hosted 140 students and at least five students were National Masters and eight had expert ratings.
The K-8 Championship section hosted 216 student and at least four were National Masters and 15 had expert ratings.
the K-9 Under 1250 section hosted 159 students and 169 students competed in the K-8 Under 1000 section. The K-8 Under 750 section hosted 183 students, while 50 students competed in the K-9 Unrated section.
