Sponsored by the state Parks and Recreation Commission and the Friends of St. Edward Park, the local Earth Day celebration is set for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 18 in St. Edward Park.

According to the Friends group, the event features display tables, tours of various parts of St. Edward Park, slideshows and numerous other environmentally themed activities.

Again as advertised by the Friends of St. Edward, some highlights include:

• Northshore Fire Department equipment ready for inspection by children all of ages.

• Park rangers will conduct tours of the historic St. Edward seminary building, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.

• A volunteer caretaker for heirloom trees in the park, Don Ricks will guide a walk though the park orchard and share tips on how visitors can care for their own fruit trees.

• Mushroom enthusiasts can learn about the fungus among us from professor Joe Ammirati of the University of Washington and UW graduate student Luke Bayler.

Other displays and events will be presented by Puget Sound Energy, Streamkeepers, the King County Library system, Arrowhead Girl Scouts and the Discovery School.

Times of shows, stories, talks and tours will be posted in the St. Edward Seminary building. Displays will be set up in the Grand Hall.
