With several incumbents not seeking re-election, there are bound to be some changes in the lineup for this area’s delegation to the state legislature resulting from the Aug. 17 primary.
Candidate filing for the election ended June 11.
Currently held by State Sen. Darlene Fairley, D-Lake Forest Park, the District 32 State Senate seat might be the biggest prize up for grabs.
Having held office since 1995, Fairley has stated she will not be seeking another term. Also as previously announced, two familiar names will be among those seeking to replace her: Kenmore Mayor David Baker and State Rep. Maralyn Chase, D-Shoreline.
Also joining in the fray is candidate Patty Butler, another Shoreline Democrat. Baker is entering the race from the Republican side.
As Chase attempts to move on to the Senate, numerous candidates have stepped up to try for her District 32, Position 1 spot in the House.
Those candidates include former Shoreline mayor Cindy Ryu, running as a Democrat.
Also in the race: Republican Art Coday and Democrat Doris Fujioka McConnell, both also of Shoreline.
Incumbent State Rep. Ruth Kagi, D-Lake Forest Park, is seeking to retain her Position 2 seat in District 32. She is being challenged by Republican Gary Gagliardi of Shoreline and Stan Lippmann, a Lake Forest Park Democrat.
There are two wide-open races in for the state representative positions in District 1.
Now holding Position 1 in District 1, Rep. Al O’Brien, D-Mountlake Terrace, announced in 2008 he would not seek re-election in 2010 and is apparently sticking with his decision.
Vying to replace O’Brien is a fairly crowded field of five candidates, notably including former Bothell deputy mayor Sandy Guinn.
Last year, Guinn lost her bid for re-election to Bothell City Council. Guinn is entering the state race as a Republican.
Other candidates in the race are: Vince DeMiero, Democrat, Mountlake Terrace; Dick Lapinski, Republican, Lynnwood; Dennis Richter, Republican, Bothell; and, Derek Stanford, Democrat, Bothell.
An incumbent also is missing in the race for District 1, Position 2. Having veered off into politics in 2005, State Rep. Mark Ericks, D-Snohomish, is apparently headed back into law enforcement.
On June 9, President Barack Obama nominated the former Bothell police chief to head up the U.S. Marshall Service for the Western District of Washington.
That nomination is subject to approval by the U.S. Senate.
Those filing to replace Ericks in Olympia are: Dave Griffin, Democrat, Woodinville; Luis Moscoso, Democrat, Mountlake Terrace; and, Heidi Munson, Republican, Bothell.
