As Washington prepares to ring in the new year, Snohomish County officials are already celebrating a unique milestone: The county has had no motor vehicle traffic fatalities from Nov. 1 to Dec. 30. Officials hope the trend continues through New Year’s Eve.
Oct. 23 marked the most recent fatality, on State Route 204 in Lake Stevens, said Tracy McMillan, Snohomish County DUI and Target Zero Task Force Manager.
“It’s incredibly rare to go two months with no fatality crashes; we’d be thrilled if this became the new normal,” said Sheriff Ty Trenary. “Tonight especially, we want to encourage everyone to drive safely and designate a driver if their festivities involve alcohol.”
Target Zero, a traffic safety partnership between numerous state, local, federal, and law enforcement agencies, aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2030.
