A Woodinville couple was arrested and booked into Snohomish County Jail on drug charges after a routine stop by a Washington State Trooper on Sunday after he pulled over their 2007 Nissan Sentra for going 77 mph on I-405 through Canyon Park.
But drugs were not all he found.
Once stopped, trooper Keith Leary immediately smelled marijuana in the car, and the driver, 28-year-old Anna Boyle, allegedly said she “took a few hits earlier.”
Leary found evidence of methamphetamine and heroin, as well as drug paraphernalia and prescription drugs.
While he was searching the car, the trooper said he heard a “thumping sound” coming from the trunk, and a second trooper opened the hatch to find an 8-year-old girl and two boys, ages 7 and 5, along with a dog. The kids told troopers they hadn’t eaten since the previous night.
In questioning Boyle, she said the kids, who are hers, “crawled back there” from the back seat, according to Leary.
Troopers also say the car was packed with various items, including a snowboard, a guitar and various bags of miscellaneous items.
A prosecutor will decide whether the couple will be charged for keeping the kids in the trunk, and Child Protective Services now has custody of the children and the dog.
“Our heart goes out to the kids that are not with their mom right now, but hopefully they are in a place where they are being taken care of, they are being fed,” Leary said.
