The Northshore School District Board of Directors will consider a resolution to seek a renewal of a state waiver to continue a 175-day student calendar at its Dec. 14 and Jan. 11, 2011, board meetings. A public hearing will be held during the regularly scheduled board meeting at 4 p.m. Dec. 14 at the district Administration Center, 3330 Monte Villa Parkway, Bothell, to gather community input. The community is invited to attend and provide feedback at both board meetings.
The 175-day calendar allows for better continuity of instruction, fewer partial student days, improved curriculum planning, staff development time for teachers and coordination of school improvement efforts.
Last year, the district used the waiver days to focus on school-improvement review and planning and site-based teacher training, based on need, in areas such as literacy, math and social studies.
The standard state school calendar is 180 days. The State Board of Education must grant a waiver for the proposed calendar. A decision on the waiver would be made in March 2011.
