Northshore Scholarship Foundation launches 29th year of operation

Scholarship recipient number 1,500 will be introduced next May 21 as the Northshore Scholarship Foundation launches its 29th year of operations this month to benefit college-bound graduates of Northshore’s four high schools.

The Foundation and its sponsors will award 67 scholarships in 2013 valued at $139,000. The Foundation is operated by the Rotary clubs of Northshore and Woodinville and the Kiwanis Club of Northshore.

The Foundation awarded 60 scholarships in 2012 valued at $128,500. For academic year 2013-14, the Foundation has added four new scholarships to build on the total of more than $2 million in grants already provided to 1,499 recipients since 1984 when the Foundation was organized.

These include a $1,500 scholarship at Inglemoor High School to be given in memory of long-time Kiwanis member Frank and Jane Weed and the first Greater Woodinville Chamber of Commerce scholarship of $1,500 available at Woodinville High School for a graduating senior or for an incoming student from Woodinville at Cascadia Community College or University of Washington Bothell.

The chamber offers the grant as an “investment in the future business leaders, entrepreneurs and innovators of our community.”

In addition, the first Northshore Foundation Memorial scholarship of $2,000 is available to a graduating senior from any one of the four secondary schools in the Northshore School District. The grant is aimed at a recipient who plans to study music or prepare for a teaching career and is to be given in memory of Chris Lin, Darren Lindal, Dr. Walter E. Sundstrom, Kathleen Sanford and Anna Ferguson Cowles.

The fourth scholarship is for the first Pat Matthews Masters of Education Scholarship of $2,000 for a student enrolled in the Masters of Education program at University of Washington Bothell who is working toward a teaching certificate or to build credentials for further service in education.

Applications for new and renewal scholarships are available online at www.ns-scholarship.org or in the counseling and career offices at Inglemoor,Bothell, Woodinville high schools and the Secondary Academy for Success(SAS).

Deadline for graduating high school seniors is Feb. 4, 2013 and thedeadline for those seeking renewal of a scholarship is April 1, 2013. A complete listing of the 67 scholarships available is also included on the website.

The Foundation manages 53 scholarship accounts established by community organizations and as family memorials. Its assets have grown through donations and investments from $5,661 in 1984 to $1.2 million as of June 2012.
