The Northshore Fire Department will honor several local citizens for their recent life-saving actions at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at the Northshore Fire Department headquarters.

A few people nearby witnessed the collapse of a stranger at St. Edwards State Park on Sept. 15 and went to his aid.

The bystanders realized the man was not breathing, had no pulse and initiated CPR. Park staff members were notified and came to their assistance with an AED (automatic external defibrillator).

Their combined efforts were successful and the man was released to go home after a short hospital stay.

“This is an example of a great success in many ways: A group of citizens was willing to help a stranger in need; the American Heart Association has recently been promoting “chest compressions only” CPR for a witnessed collapse and this was utilized for this event; and the proliferation of public AED’s was critical in the successful outcome of this event,” said Fire Marshal Jeff LaFlam. “All of these factors came together and resulted in the saving of a life.”

The Northshore Fire Department headquarters is located at 7220 NE 181st St. in Kenmore.
