Local scout leader Jed Reynolds, a Bothell resident, will be awarded the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Honor Award March 21 for saving the life of Nathan Jenson while putting his own life at risk.
Graham Urey of Woodinville and Jack Richins, also from Bothell, will receive the BSA’s heroism award for contributing to the life-saving effort. All three leaders are members of the Woodinville 1st Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
While glissading a Mt. Baker snowfield on July 2, 2011, Jenson fell into a crevice. Immediately, the leaders and varsity scouts of Troop 627 went to work at rescuing their fellow troop member. Urey and Richins rigged anchoring systems that lowered Reynolds down the crevice to reach the youth. At one point, Reynolds needed to unhook himself from his belay system in order to get Jenson attached. Members of the scout troop assisted their leaders in the rescue, and helped Jenson down the mountain to receive medical attention.
