Students at Cascadia Community College and University of Washington Bothell will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by serving the community on Jan. 18.
The fifth annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service will include a variety of events led by organized volunteer teams. The event is expected to draw more than 100 volunteers, including State Representative Derek Stanford (D-1st LD), and Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (D, WA), who will share a few words with participants before donning rubber boots and gloves to help remove invasive plants from the campus wetlands.
The event is at 8 a.m. at the Mobius Hall CC3 on University of Washington Bothell campus, located at 18115 Campus Way N.E.
“Stepping up to volunteer and participate in this year’s Day of Service is a terrific way to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,” DelBene said. “The commitment, hard work, and civic engagement by these students help to embody the spirit of Dr. King’s teachings on empowering individuals and strengthening our local communities.”
Student organizers partnered with community organizations to offer a variety of volunteer activities including bowling with children with disabilities, sorting and organizing donated clothing and conducting repair and maintenance projects.
“Having the opportunity to volunteer with our peers gives us the chance to make new friends, find new passions, and discover new places,” said Luda Putrya, a cascadia student coordinator.
University of Washington student Heather Felix said this service is a way to achieve equality by connecting people and supporting one another.
“The Day of Service is a good representation of UW Bothell because we are a small campus that is very community focused,” Felix said. “Dr. King’s vision was for a ‘beloved community’ in which there was equality and effective action.”
