Inglewood Golf Club (IGC) members in Kenmore are tipping their hats to the military on June 9, when they will host 60 active military personnel from Navy Station Everett.

“Military Appreciation Day” will thank those who serve with an afternoon of golf, dinner and friendship at Inglewood, a storied private golf club on the north shore of Lake Washington.

The idea for the event came from club member and board trustee Bob Bell, who along with several other board members, IGC members and staff will host the servicemen beginning at 1 p.m. They will be paired one-on-one with a club member for 18 holes of golf in a tournament format, followed by dinner and awards. Individual IGC members will each foot the bill for their playing partner.

Bell said that members are also contributing money over and above the cost of the event, money that will be donated to the Wounded Warriors Project. Additionally, IGC has a club project that benefits disabled veterans. To date, more than 375 golf clubs have been delivered to American Lakes Veterans Golf in Tacoma.

The idea to team up with Navy Station Everett, aside from its relatively close proximity to IGC, came from Denny Vaughan, a retired admiral.

“We started this project a year ago,” Bell said, “and it just kept growing. The invitation was first-come, first-served, and the 60 spots filled up fast.”

Local businesses joined in, as well: Lynnwood Mercedes will sponsor a hole-in-one contest and Prep Sportswear has donated golf shirts for the guests. Other sponsors include Anthony’s Home Port Restaurants, Sysco, Interbay Foods and Charlie’s Produce.

“It’s going to be a great day. A chance to say thanks and for us to get know these brave young men,” Bell said.
