A Kenmore resident awoke to the sound of a smoke alarm early Thursday morning. The man saw smoke and flames coming from his back porch and called 911.

“Using a fire extinguisher, he quickly knocked down most of the fire,” said Northshore Fire Department Fire Marshal Jeff LaFlam in a release. “He then used a garden hose to extinguish the rest.”

Firefighters were dispatched to the home in the 6500 block of N.E. 198 Street at 6:16 a.m. The Northshore firefighters were assisted by personnel from Bothell Fire Department.

“Upon arrival, firefighters saw the heavy charring and burnt remnants of a wooden hot tub,” said LaFlam. “Firefighters removed portions of the deck and home to ensure no fire had extended into the house.”

A King County Fire Investigator and the Northshore Fire Department Fire Marshal investigated the cause of the fire and it was determined to be accidental. Estimated fire damage is $15,000. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries.

“This fire once again shows the importance of having working smoke alarms and an extinguisher in your home,” said LaFlam. “Test your smoke alarms monthly and replace your batteries annually.”
