The campus of Cascadia Community College and the University of Washington, Bothell features unusual decorations this week: bras.

Students at both schools have decorated bras that will be displayed on campus in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Students, faculty and staff are being encouraged to wear pink to support breast cancer awareness.

“It’s been very rewarding to see the response. Students have been thrilled to help out and decorate bras. So many students have participated that we ran out of bras and had to get more,” says Emily Reilly, Cascadia Activities Board officer. Reilly’s life was touched by cancer three years ago when her grandmother was diagnosed with it.

The highlight of the week is Passionately Pink for the Cure Day on October 28. Decorated bras will be featured at a celebration from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the North Creek Events Center and attendees will vote to determine the best decorated bra. Items donated by local businesses will be auctioned off, with all proceeds benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

“Awareness is really important. I often hear that people want to get involved, but they don’t know how. Giving them an opportunity here on campus makes it easy and helps spread the word about breast cancer at the same time,” says Reilly.
