Bothell resident Mary Jo Selg was selected as the March of Dimes “Nurse of the Year” for Mentoring during the 10th annual awards ceremony.

The regional office of the March of Dimes annually honors the nursing profession by recognizing the nurses of the year for Western Washington. The event was held Nov. 15 at the Meydenbauer Conference Center in Bellevue. Nurses were nominated and recognized in 13 separate categories.

Selg, who works at Overlake Medical Center in Belleuve, was nominated in three categories, including Distinguished Nurse of the Year and Education.

A colleague described Selg as a motivator: “She values the contribution each nurse brings to the profession. She is preparing and training young nurses to be the future leaders in our field. She displays professionalism and engagement every day. She is the heart of Overlake.”

Selg stated that it was an honor to receive the Mentoring recognition for “providing positive, professional influence, guidance, and support for nurses.”

She was given the award for her work with staff, new graduates and student nurses. Selg has worked at Overlake for the past 20 years and serves on the Nursing Advisory Boards for UW-Bothell, Northwest University and other area nursing programs. She has been an active participant in the development of the Northwest Clinical Placement Consortium, which coordinates placement of students in area hospitals.

Selg received her master’s degree in Medical Surgical Nursing from the University of Washington and has lived in Bothell with her husband George andfamily since 1977. The couple has two daughters and a son-in-law.
