The following is a release from the Washington State Department of Transportation.
Bothell government is ‘Going Orange’ during the week of March 23-27 in support of Work Zone Safety Awareness Week, presented by Washington Transportation and Utility Workers.
For one week in March, citizens are asked to “Go Orange” in support of the men and women who maintain and improve roadways, highways and streets.
Washington, on average, has 1,000 highway work-zone injuries each year, of these 99 percent of the people injured or killed are the product of collisions with vehicles.
Along with the safety awareness week, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) encourages drivers to remember some tips for work zones:
• Slow down to the posted speed
• Pay close attention to what’s going on around the vehicle
• Merge as soon as possible, instead of waiting until the last second
• Expect delays, but plan for them by leaving early or using alternative routes
WSDOT will be hosting a worker memorial on April 22 for those who have fallen during road work. The event will start at 10 a.m. at the WSDOT headquarters in Olympia.
