Leviton Manufacturing Company Inc. in Bothell was fined $5,000 by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for violating hazardous substances inventory reporting rules on June 2.
The violation was under the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA), which requires industry to report on the storage, use and releases of hazardous substances to federal, state and local governments, according to the EPA’s website, epa.gov.
“Violations of environmental laws put public health and the environment at risk,” the EPA said in a statement. “EPA enforces federal environmental laws to protect communities and to keep our air, land and water healthy.”
EPA Region 10, which serves the Pacific Northwest, released a list of all of the more than 30 environmental and compliance actions it took in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington in April through June. The Leviton’s fine was the only action in the Bothell-Kenmore area.
“These compliance and enforcement efforts also level the playing field by deterring violators who might otherwise have an unfair business advantage over environmentally compliant facilities and businesses,” the EPA said in a statement.
