The Bothell High School football team advanced to the state finals with a 37-19 victory against Newport on Saturday at the Tacoma Dome.
The Cougars will face Chiawana at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Tacoma Dome for the state title and a shot at completing a perfect 14-0 season.
Chiawana defeated Graham-Kapowsin, 28-12, on Saturday in the Tacoma Dome.
Against Newport, the Cougars wasted little time taking the lead as Damani St. John-Watkins capped the teams first drive with a two-yard touchdown run.
The defense got into the act when Jordan Barker took a fumble recovery and ran it into the end zone for the 13-0 lead, as the extra-point kick failed.
The Knights would fight back to tie the game at 13-13 just before half time. But Bothell’s high-powered offense would show why the Cougars have averaged more than 40 points per game this season. Bothell quarterback Ross Bowers found Jackson Keimig for a 21-yard touchdown pass and the 20-13 lead heading into the locker room.
Newport pulled with in one point, scoring a touchdown to open the second half but missing the extra point.
Bower’s arm and Dayzell Wilson’s legs would prove to be too much for Newport, scoring touchdowns on a 15-yard pass to finish the third quarter and then a 41-yard pass play to cap off the scoring.
