Bastyr University is bringing back an innovative program aimed at teaching families the importance of healthy lifestyles in an effort to prevent and reduce the nation’s childhood obesity epidemic.

The Active Pediatric and Parental Lifestyle Education (APPLE) Core program takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 11 on the Bastyr University campus in Kenmore. Hosted by the Bastyr University Department of Nutrition and Exercise Science and with support from  LifeWise Health Plan of Washington and Regence, the program focuses on healthy lifestyle choices for children and their families.

Participating families will learn about health, nutrition and exercise in a supportive, educational setting.  As part of the day’s activities, parents will receive a lesson in how to shop for healthy groceries, and parents and children will learn how to prepare a healthy meal together as a family.

The APPLE Core program has a few openings left for those interested in being part of this one-day program, at a cost of just $15 per family. To be eligible, children should be between the ages of 8 and 12, and parents must complete a registration and health history questionnaire form.
