Today is the inaugural “Bastyr University Day” at the Washington State Capitol in Olympia.
According to university spokesperson Jordan Lindstrom, the event is intended both to recognize Bastyr as a leading academic institution for natural health arts and sciences education and to raise awareness of the school’s role in educating future heath-care leaders.
The day’s events include the presentation of resolutions honoring Bastyr in the legislative chambers of the state Senate and House of Representatives.
Sponsored by state Sen. Paull Shin, D-Edmonds, and Rep. Roger Goodman, D-Kirkland, the resolutions will acknowledge the university’s accomplishments in the areas of education, research and clinical service. Specifically, Lindstrom said they highlight Bastyr’s commitment to a sustainable health-care model and eco-friendly building practices, as well as its instrumental role in increasing research activity in the natural health sciences.
Located in Kenmore, Bastyr is a nonprofit, accredited institution. Founded in 1978 as the John Bastyr College of Naturopathic Medicine, the university integrates the pursuit of scientific knowledge with ancient healing methods from around the world. Today, Bastyr is the largest university of its kind in the United States, combining a multidisciplinary curriculum with leading-edge research and clinical training.
In total, Bastyr offers 14 accredited degree and certificate programs in the fields of naturopathic medicine, acupuncture and Oriental medicine, herbal sciences, health psychology, exercise science and whole food nutrition.
“We are honored that the Washington State Legislature recognizes Bastyr University’s dedication to enhancing the health and well-being of the human community, and we are grateful to Sen. Shin and Rep. Goodman for their leadership in sponsoring these important resolutions,” said Bastyr President Daniel K. Church.
“This recognition further inspires our mission as we continue to teach future health-care leaders. We look forward to making ‘Bastyr University Day’ an annual tradition celebrating the university’s contributions locally and globally.”
