This special pension benefit may be available for veterans and/or surviving spouses, who are at least 65 years old and require the regular attendance of another person to perform activities of daily living such as eating, bathing, dressing or undressing. The benefit applies to persons living in their own home, nursing home or assisted-living community. It is a no-service connected disability benefit, meaning the disability does not have to be a result of service. A veteran is eligible for up to $1,644 per month, while a surviving spouse is eligible for up to $1,056 per month. A couple is eligible for up to $1,949 per month. If both husband and wife are veterans, the benefit is $2,540.
