For many veterans, re-entering the civilian workforce can be a bit of a challenge. After years of focusing on their mission, purpose and identity as a member of the armed forces, they need to transition to their new civilian lives and learn how to thrive.
It’s not an easy transition to make. That’s where the nonprofit Operation Military Family (OMF) comes in. Founded in 2012, the Edmonds, Washington-based OMF equips veterans with the skills they need to find rewarding, gainful employment.
“For a lot of veterans, when they’re done with their service, they look around and go, ‘Now what do I do?’” said Mike Schindler, founder and CEO of OMF and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. “We give them the skills they need to be competitive in today’s marketplace.”
Digital literacy is one of the most important skills that OMF works on with veterans. That, and ensuring that veterans have access to the internet and all its opportunities.
“If you’re not connected digitally, it can be challenging,” Schindler said. “And a lot of these folks aren’t connected.”
There are more than 51,000 veterans in Snohomish County alone. To help them get online, OMF has partnered with Comcast over the past few years. Together they have held laptop giveaways for veterans, and Comcast has helped get veterans connected through low-cost internet plans, a free Xfinity Mobile line for a year and entertainment benefits that come through the Xfinity Diamond Rewards program.
“In today’s world, a reliable internet connection and digital skills are no longer optional; they are lifelines,” said Roy Novosel, Vice President of Engineering for Comcast and a Marine veteran. “Veterans need these tools to more easily access their benefits, explore employment and receive medical care. But research has shown that our nation’s heroes continue to face obstacles when it comes to digital access. That’s why we are fully committed to investing in initiatives that make a real difference for our military community.”
In addition to its partnership with OMF, Comcast offers exclusive benefits to veterans, service members and their families to help them stay connected. They include monthly discounts on Comcast services, a free Xfinity Mobile line for one year and free or discounted access to entertainment. Comcast also partners with OMF to provide digital skills-building programs, entrepreneurship opportunities and access to essential broadband and technology.
“When we’re working with some of the men and women who have served America, we want them to partner with the best of the best out there,” Schindler said. “That’s Comcast. When it comes to serving our military, veterans and families, they have been exceptional.”
