Gaby Borromeo performs at Kenmore City Hall

If Kenmore had a walk of fame, one candidate would be Gaby Borromeo, who has gained a following after appearing as a contestant in this season of the popular NBC singing competition show “The Voice.”

The Kenmore native, who now lives in New York City, recently returned to her hometown to perform before family, friends and local supporters at Kenmore City Hall.

“Kenmore always has a special place in my heart,” Borromeo said.

Mayor David Baker presented the singer-songwriter with a proclamation, declaring March 24 Gaby Borromeo Day in the City of Kenmore.

Before performing a short acoustic set at Kenmore City Hall, Borromeo also made a stop by Kenmore Junior High School to chat with choir students. If any local students have aspirations similar to hers, she offered this advice: “Go for it and be brave. … Facing your fears is one of the biggest accomplishments.”

Borromeo, whose family has been in Kenmore since the 1970s, said she had a great time on “The Voice.” She was on Adam Levine’s team and mentored by John Legend, who Borromeo previously worked with a few years ago.

“It was such an amazing experience,” she said.

Borromeo got her GED and moved to New York when she was just 15. Her sister and her sister’s husband lived there, and Borromeo’s parents made frequent visits to stay with her.

“It was a big sacrifice for my family,” Borromeo, now 22, said.

Following her stint on “The Voice,” she plans to perform at some smaller venues across the country and release a new single in the next few weeks.

“I’ve gained a fan base from appearing on the show, and they’ve already made such a big impact,” Borromeo said.
