Bothell High senior Peter Hu will present a free orchestra exhibition for his senior project at 7 p.m. Jan. 19 in the Skyview Junior High commons/cafeteria, 21404 35th Ave. S.E., Bothell. (The event has been rescheduled due to a weather-related cancellation Jan. 12.)
According to Hu, “The recital is to encourage youth involvement in string music through elementary and beyond high school by showing young musicians their potential. Musical development is important at a young age so that students can take advantages of the opportunities school string programs have to offer.”
Hu is a third-year member of the Bothell High chamber orchestra and plays drums, cello, piano, guitar and bass. He started playing cello in a fourth-grade elementary string program.
Notable performers at the exhibition will be:
• Tim Pizzichemi: A Bothell High junior who placed first in state at the 2010 solo and ensemble competition. He played at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts with the Music Educators National Convention (MENC) National Honor Orchestra in Washington, D.C., and attended the Heifetz International Music Institute.
• Red Hot Celli Peppers: A group of Bothell High cellists — Pizzichemi, Hu, Bjorn Payne and Alex Benson — that received a superior rating at the solo and ensemble competition, and performed for Bothell High functions such as the Bothell High talent show.
• Bothell High chamber orchestra quintet: In 2009, the Bothell High chamber orchestra took third place at the state solo and ensemble competition and first place at the Gresham Oregon Orchestra Festival. In 2010, the group competed at state and received recognition in the Anaheim Orchestra Festival in California. In 2011, the quintet has been invited to the play for the MENC All-Northwest Musical Convention. The quintet playing at the event includes Tyler Chen (violin/concert master), Cedar Russell (violin), Patrick Cavanaugh (viola), Pizzichemi (cello) and Hu (cello).
