In the words of its organizer, everyone involved will be very busy and most will be working for free.
Still, Wendy Crisafulli said that predictably, everyone involved is more than happy to take part.
For one day, Crisafulli throws open the doors to her Bothell dentistry office and provides completely free services — no dental insurance needed — to anyone over the age of 12.
Just in time for Valentine’s Day, this year’s “Dentists with Heart” event is Feb. 12 at Crisafulli Dental, 18920 Bothell Way N.E., in the Kaufman Building, at the corner of Bothell Way and Northeast 190th Street.
For the patients, Crisafulli said it’s a chance to get a fixable but broken tooth fixed, to have a decayed tooth pulled or to obtain a long-overdue cleaning for an otherwise healthy mouth.
For Crisafulli, her staff and three other participating dentists (all working for that day at Crisafulli dental), it’s an obvious chance to give something back.
“The vibrations and good energy coming from this office is incredible,” Crisafulli said referring to past free-dentistry days.
For the “Dentists with Heart” event, Crisafulli added she deliberately targets older children and adults, stating there are plenty of opportunities for young children to receive free or reduced-cost dental care.
“It’s the older population that has a harder time accessing care, there are a lot of roadblocks to care,” Crisafulli said.
Adults without insurance sometimes can obtain government dental coupons, she added, but described them as good for only very limited services.
This is the third year Crisafulli has offered free services, and on past days between 50 and 60 patients have passed through her office. Those kinds of numbers keep her staff moving.
“There’s no standing around,” Crisafulli said.
Crisafulli isn’t shy about giving away her time and professional skills. For eight years, she regularly has helped staff a mobile dental van based in Everett. Her office provides free dental work to victims of domestic violence. Now roaming Crisafulli’s office is the latest service dog she has helped train.
Still, perhaps most notably, Crisafulli has made several trips oversees, volunteering her time in Vietnam, Honduras and Israel. Vietnam and the youngsters she’s served there undoubtedly have made a deep impression on her. While she states Vietnam is obviously a Third World country, she clearly has greatly enjoyed her trips there.
“It’s a wild and woolly place,” Crisafulli said, but talks mostly about the children she has met.
“They are just cute as bugs, but, boy, do they have some pathologies in their mouths,” Crisafulli added.
Working in a clinic run by a friend, Crisafulli said she and other dentists have pulled as many as 1,200 teeth in a week. She added the Da Nang clinic where she volunteers has moved from saving plastic surgical gloves to being as clean as any in the U.S.
In the end, Crisafulli wanted to talk mostly about her staff and how much they step up for “Dentists with Heart.”
“This is the best day of the year for them,” she said. “It’s a day they look forward to each year and they work hard at it.”
