Ever marvel at a stunning vista or appreciate the quiet beauty of a country lane? Wish it could be captured? This is the challenge that local artists Jannelle Loewen and Suzanne Burnell set for themselves whenever they head outside.

An artist always considers what ‘draws’ her into the scene in the first place. Then she tries to instill that essence into her painting, aiming to capture more than just a likeness of the scene before her.

Ken Stodola, owner of Kaewyn Gallery/Framewright, is hosting Burnell and Loewen’s landscape show entitled: “Go Outside! Art inspired: walks, hikes and road trips.” Stodola enjoys showing and highlighting the accomplishments of local artists as well as making exceptional frames for all artwork.

Join Burnell and Loewen for their Artist’s Reception/Show Opening Party from 5–8 p.m. on Friday, May 31 at the Tsuga Gallery/Framewright at 10101 Main Street in Bothell. This show will run through July 6.

Burnell’s path to becoming an artist started long before she formally picked up a brush or pastel.

Initially trained as a geologist, she spent chilly summer months camping and mapping the geology of the Canadian Arctic. This solitary time honed her interest in wild places. Canadian artists, referred to as “The Group of Seven” were her early artistic influences, as these early Canadian artists captured the raw and powerful beauty of northern Canada. Painting is Burnell’s way of appreciating and sharing the beauty she sees in the world around us.

Loewen has been drawing and painting since childhood. She uses pastels on black or colored sanded paper to catch the spirit of a scene or subject, the snap and surprise of dramatic darks against the light. Loewen’s art has been accepted into and won awards in local, national and international juried shows. She is represented by the Cole Gallery in Edmonds, and Lawrence Galleries in Oregon. Loewen also teaches pastel painting at Arts Umbrella in Bothell.
