The city of Bothell declares Sept. 16 American Legion Day and handed off a proclamation to the Bothell American Legion Post 127 last week. The United States Congress chartered the national American Legion Sept. 16, 1919.

The proclamation includes the line, “Whereas, Bothell American Legion Post 127 strongly supports veterans, their families and our community at large.”

Chartered Sept. 11, 1920, Bothell Post 127 had four delegates — historian Carl Wipperman, State Vice Commander Jake Cabuag, Post Commander Burt Marsh and Post Vice Commander Jon Tallman — attend this year’s American Legion National Convention in Louisville, Ky., Aug. 21-27. There were some 10,000 people in attendance from the 3.6-million national membership.

The American Legion is chartered in the U.S. Congress and presents its mandates to this body. The legion’s four major programs are: veterans affairs, Americanism, children and youth and national defense.

At last week’s meeting, the legion honored students, from left, Anne Horning, Kayvon Behroozian and Haliee Stringfellow — joined by state chairs Ruth and Carl Wipperman — for their participation in the state and nation government and citizenship programs.
