In a recent article in the Bothell-Kenmore Reporter, we perceived that the Northshore School District’s (NSD) development of a multimillion dollar bus barn is of greater importance then actually bussing all children in our district safely.
In particular, NSD has trampled and ignored the needs of disabled students in regards to transportation. It has become a nightmare for some of these families. Of course, the results are staggering in relation to all our children being affected in each district. All districts have eliminated bus routes and requiring little children to make longer walks to a different bus stop. Some parents are choosing to help their neighbors’ children to their respective bus stops due to parents’ work schedules.
Special-needs children do not have this privilege, therefore our childrens’ bussing experience is completely different. When our most vulnerable children are not completely assisted, it could have a detrimental effect. Sometimes, these effects are witnessed only by the parents.
It is our hope this letter will open further dialogue. Isn’t it amazing that an insane killer can get transportation to the county fair and our children can not even get a ride to their afterschool programs?
