After reading three letters in three weeks to the editor bewailing the decision the Kenmore City Council made several years ago to reject McMenamins’ plans for St Edward State Park, I would like to point out the reasons the council rightly rejected the plan:
• 1) It called for removing the children’s playground already in place in order to build a brewhouse on the same spot.
• 2) It would have replaced a significant portion of the beautiful rolling lawn that surrounds the seminary with an asphalt parking lot for 200 cars.
• 3) And the irreplaceable peace and quiet of a unique state park would have been disrupted by an establishment that included hotel rooms, a pub, a restaurant etc.
If the McMenamins HAD been built at St Edwards, we would not have the events that take place there now: free music concerts in the summer on the grand lawn and a wonderful environmental learning center.
So bravo to the Kenmore City Council for having made the right decision!
Siting the new McMenamins establishment in Bothell is a much better fit, and I look forward to visiting it there.
