Is it not time for the city of Bothell to join neighboring communities in banning fireworks?
Four years ago, my wife and I moved from Kirkland to south Bothell, just inside the city limits. Having lived in Kirkland for 32 years, we were very surprised that fireworks are permitted, and even sold by a local church. To our dismay, each 4th of July we are subjected to a bombardment that brings to mind battles that have recently been fought in the Middle East. Though this might sound humorous, I am serious in expressing concern for the problems this brings.
Bothell permits the discharge of consumer fireworks, which by law means “any small firework device designed to produce visible effects by combustion.” The authorization granted by the city, however, is used by countless individuals as a way to discharge unlawful fireworks purchased elsewhere. These include skyrockets, chasers, missile-type rockets, firecrackers, and salutes.
Notification to the police department has brought no action. The use of unlawful fireworks places property owners at risk for fire, personal safety is compromised, and animals suffer needlessly. I have voiced my concern to the city council, but see nothing on the horizon suggesting any change to the status quo.
It is my belief that Bothell city leaders should join their counterparts in neighboring municipalities in recognizing the dangers inherent in permitting the use of fireworks. It is also my hope that other like-minded residents contact their council members and express their views.
Thank you!
