“Cup Cake in a Can,” an idea produced by freshmen Martin Yanagihara, Kelsey Dill, Tylor Jones and Lisa Pesin, topped the competition at the University of Washington, Bothell’s ninth-annual “Hell Night,” a student entrepreneurship competition.

“Hell Night” is a competition wherein teams of students present their business ideas to members of the public. The public serves as “investors” and decides which team is best prepared to take its plan and turn it into a functioning business. Competitors spend months in advance preparing business plans and proposals for the event.

The team’s product, “Cup Cake in a Can,” is a dual-sided, dual-nozzle, CO²-compressed aerosol can that is an all-in-one baking system. Three-fourths of the can dispenses cupcake batter, while the other one-fourth of the can dispenses frosting. Each cap on either side of the can contains built-in sprinkles and baking tins, making this an easy to use and virtually mess-free cupcake baking system.

Team spokesperson Jones says, “Winning ‘Hell Night’ was a lot of all-nighters that led to a great sense of accomplishment, but the single greatest thing we got out of the experience was our team. It was solid and that was the factor that truly helped us win.”
