It’s all about color, says Craig Davis, when discussing the upcoming Bothell 2011 LiveARTS Festival.
Last year, about 7,000 people attended the two-day festival on the Cascadia Community College/University of Washington-Bothell campus. Davis, the festival chairman, said he’s looking forward to seeing that amount of art enthusiasts again when the free event takes place from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 25 and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 26 on the schools’ shared campus at 18345 Campus Way N.E.

As Mario Reyes looks out the window of his Los Reyes Mexican grocery store on Bothell Way Northeast, he has a bit of sadness in his eyes — but a lot of hope lives inside there, too. He badly wants things to improve for his business during the city’s construction project near his shop.
“I’m losing customers, I’m losing business,” he said. “I have no money to pay my rent. Twelve years we’re here and I’ve never had any problems — until now.
“I need some help from somebody.”
Brian Inch enjoys computers, history and woodworking. And knitting. The Bothell Secondary Academy for Success (SAS) senior learned to knit from his mom and grandmother and notes that he puts a ton of effort into that craft. If grades were awarded in knitting, he would probably be near the top of the class.
When Jenna-Jo Duffy commits to something, she’s going to put in a quality effort. From the drama-department actors to the associated-student-body (ASB) representatives to the volleyball players, they all had the Cedar Park Christian senior on their side during her four years at the Bothell school.
A few weeks ago, while sitting in the Bothell High courtyard after school, senior Brianna Lacy burst out laughing while discussing holding on to her four-year, 4.0 grade-point average before graduation.
Shelton View Elementary kids were in the courtroom recently on Law Day, and Bothell judge Michelle Gehlsen could relate to their wide-eyed curiosity about the legal system.
“I did a mock trial in early grade school and I thought, ‘I really enjoy this,’ and then I did one in junior high and then we did I think a couple in high school,” Gehlsen said. “I just always had a feeling from a very early age that I wanted to be an attorney and really just to help people.”

About two weeks ago, Graham Hamilton — who won a prestigious award for his role of Hamlet — excitedly says: “I’m still trying to wrap myself around it. The first thing I have to do is buy a mantle.”
Two quotes from two men roughly 410 years apart. The recent display of words is not from a prince in the Kingdom of Denmark, but from a 1999 Inglemoor High graduate and actor who won a Helen Hayes Award for outstanding lead actor in a resident play in Washington, D.C., last month. Hamilton, 30, who grew up in Bothell, tied with another actor for the Hayes Robert Prosky Award and both received top honors. (Hayes was a renowned theater actress, who lived from 1900-1993; Prosky was an accomplished actor who lived from 1930-2008.)
The sign outside the current Bothell City Hall says, “It’s Your City Hall!” On a recent day, several passersby stopped and perused the information on the colorful board, which informed readers of workshops inviting community members to give their input on the design of the new city-hall and city-center-campus.
Nearly 60 residents attended the March and April meetings, according to Bothell Public Information Officer Joy Johnston. Three years ago yesterday, the Bothell resident was involved in a serious automobile accident. Almost a year later, she was out and about, visiting with family members, friends and an emergency medical service (EMS) first-responder at Sparta’s Pizza, thanking everyone for their support.
I was honored to be there that day, and was welcomed into the fold even though I was a stranger to most of the crowd. It was a celebration of life — and everyone can take part.

The University of Washington, Bothell/Cascadia Community College shared campus’ economic impact on the city of Bothell includes providing jobs and trained employees for local businesses; expenditures and government and tax revenues, including dollars paid by employees, visitors and vendors who do business with the schools; and even students buying food, supplies and gas in town.
It’s progress.
That’s how Bothell residents Mike Nelson and John Roberts see it as they stand in their front yards and gaze across the street at the cranes, construction trucks and walls going up at the future Lakeside at Canyon Park site — which will feature a Safeway supermarket — on the southwest corner of Bothell Everett Highway and 240th Street Southeast.
Property Development Centers (PDC) broke ground the first week in March on approximately 13 acres of land that will feature a 150,000-square-foot shopping center, 50,000-square-foot Safeway and six shop buildings with approximately 40,000 square feet of retail space.

The manager of Maser’s Grooming and Pet Boutique on Northeast 181st Street in Kenmore is talking about comments she’s heard on the new, 10,000-square-foot Kenmore Library being built across the parking lot from her store. Construction on the $8.4 million project, which broke ground June 8, is expected to be completed for a mid-July opening.
She couldn’t help it. Davina Duerr’s emotions got the best of her on a recent day at the YMCA pool: While swimming laps, the Bothell mom glanced over a few lanes and saw her daughter, Ende, putting the finishing strokes on earning her swim-test certificate.
“That was a big deal, wasn’t it?” she asked Ende, 6 ½, at home last week. “I saw her and it was one of those moments when you get choked up. You see her struggling, but she powered through, didn’t you? It’s a great ‘mom moment.’ Perseverance, right? That’s what you want your kids to do.”
Duerr also enjoys watching her 9-year-old son Sebastian’s “rowdy” lacrosse games, and participates in the screaming and joking around on the sidelines with the other parents.
When Meg Reid died of lymphoma in January, her daughter, Janie, couldn’t have asked for a stronger, more caring group of friends to provide comfort.
“Meg was the kind of person who everybody loved, and so she was considered the cool mom on the block,” said Janie’s pal, and Kenmore Junior High classmate, Victoria Robinson. Joined by fellow ninth-grader Katie Skurski at Tully’s in Kenmore one afternoon last week, the three 15-year-olds laugh a little.
“We all were really hurt by her loss,” Robinson added, as the girls shift into quiet mode.

When Bothell Chateau Retirement residents gather for their regular discussion group, five-year resident Ray Gould said the topics range far and wide.
“We often get together and talk about what’s going on in the world, and surely the disaster in Japan is just awful,” he said. “The people here are very caring, and thus came all the contributions.”
Chateau Retirement residents, employees and ownership contributed $10,025 collectively to support Red Cross relief efforts in Japan following the recent earthquake, tsunami and damage to nuclear reactors. Significant contributions came in from individual resident checks, employee payroll deductions and owner matching incentives.
Zizhong (James) Fan, a former Seattle Genetics employee who was suspected of leaking insider information on clinical trials at the Bothell company, was planning on catching a flight back to Seattle to appear in U.S. District Court April 15.
A New Jersey Port Authority official told the Reporter that Fan jumped to his death April 14 from the fourth floor of the parking garage at Newark Liberty International Airport at about 8 p.m.
“It’s an unfortunate tragedy,” said Fan’s lawyer, Adam Braun, of Los Angeles. “In the end, he couldn’t face the prospect of being deported or being separated from his children (if convicted).”
